Annual Math Counts Competition 2019

On Saturday, March 7, 2020, ASCE YMF members volunteered to help our NSPE chapter with the annual Math Counts competition. Student from all over the valley join and use their smarts to try to attain the top spot and move on to nationals. YMF members helped grade the math tests, and additionally, help with a STEM activity. After the competition, students were given the opportunity to build and test their own “zip line” design made from small paper cups, straws and other simple household materials. They tested them on two types of string to demonstrate the importance of the coefficient of friction. Students quickly learned in a fun environment, how to build, test, and optimize a design.
